Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:  

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is the premier criminal investigative agency in the state of Kansas. Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:  

The KBI is accepting applications to fill two positions in the Biology/DNA Casework Section in our Topeka Laboratory. The KBI Forensic Science Laboratory is committed to providing timely science services to the Kansas criminal justice community. Employees of the KBI are dedicated to preserving the safety of Kansas citizens through the application of science and modern technology.

Position level is offered based upon your qualifications but include:

            Forensic Scientist I- $25.68 - $30.46 Hourly

Duties include, but are not limited to: discipline specific training.

 

            Forensic Scientist II- $31.22 - $35.25 Hourly

Duties include, but are not limited to: analyzes and documents evidence; writes reports of results; testifies as an expert witness in a court of law; provides training and presentations to outside agencies and organizations.

 

            Forensic Scientist III- $36.13 - $46.14 Hourly

Duties include, but are not limited to: analyzes and documents evidence; writes reports of results; testifies as an expert witness in a court of law; reviews technical procedures; assists with quality assurance activities; assists in training new scientists; provides training and presentations to outside agencies and organizations.

 


Qualifications

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT(S)

  • Biology applicants require a Bachelor's degree in natural science or forensic science including a total of nine (9) semester hours in the three DNA class requirements of Genetics, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology with a total of 60 semester hours of coursework in natural science. College coursework is also required in Statistics or Population Genetics.

 

PREFERRED REQUIREMENT(S)

  • Previous work in an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited forensic science laboratory.
  • Experience performing independent casework; examining, evaluating and reporting out results in casework.
  • Experience testifying in a court of law as an expert witness.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • As a condition of employment, you will be subject to a pre-employment process to include a polygraph examination, fingerprint based records check, and comprehensive background investigation, including reference check of past and present employers.  The pre-employment process will be waived for current KBI personnel who have previously completed the screening requirements
