Compensation:

  • Annual Salary Range: $39,000 - $40,000 Per Year
  • Hourly Pay Range: $18.75 - $19.23 Per Hour

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

This position will remain posted until filled.

Location: Applicants must live in the Northeast region of Kansas.

Large and Small Scale Inspections.  The selected individual will inspect and test scales using certified weights at places of business in which the scales are used to ensure tolerances comply with state statutes and regulations.  The inspector will issue formal orders on behalf of the Kansas Department of Agriculture for scales which are rejected during the inspection.  Scale inspection reports may be reviewed daily by the employee’s supervisor for accuracy and completeness. 

Price Verification Inspections.  The selected individual will inspect places of business at which the price of an item offered at retail is determined at a point of sale to ensure pricing accuracy and to determine compliance with state statutes and regulations.  The inspector will issue formal orders on behalf of the Kansas Department of Agriculture to businesses whose pricing accuracy does not meet requirements.  Price verification inspection reports may be reviewed daily by the employee’s supervisor for accuracy and completeness. 

Package Checks.  The selected individual will inspect places of business which sell pre-packaged products to ensure accurate labeling, weight, volume, and item count of packaged products.  The inspector will issue formal orders on behalf of the Kansas Department of Agriculture to businesses whose packages do not meet quantity or labeling requirements.  Package check inspection reports may be reviewed daily by the employee’s supervisor for accuracy and completeness. 

Other duties as assigned.  The selected individual is expected to complete other duties as assigned such as record keeping, report writing and other administrative tasks.  Vehicle and equipment maintenance and cleaning will be completed as needed.  Technical training and review of testing requirements will be assigned as necessary.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.  
  • Must be able to repetitively lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must know how to do basic as well as convert units of measurement and perform algebraic functions.
  • Must have the ability to read and comprehend complex written directions, policies, statutes, and regulations.
  • A current class C driver’s license without restrictions is required prior to employment.  The employee is required to obtain a Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within the first year of employment.  CDL training and associated costs to license will be provided. 

Preferred Qualifications (not required):

  • Two years’ experience working in the agribusiness, retail or wholesale business environmental is preferred. College credit hours may be substituted for work experience.
  • Prior experience working with scales, other weighing and measuring devices is helpful.
  • Experience working in the agribusiness and/or retail sector is helpful.
